Violetta Montañez

What are you most looking forward to this service year?
I am excited to look forward to serving with Friends of the Park organization, my role there and learning more about what other corps members have chose to serve with. I’m really extroverted, so I love making new connections and friends. This is really new for me, and I feel like I’m in college all over again ( because there’s so much to learn about and so many resources).

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
My career goal: to advocate for free health insurance and access to wellness centers (including gyms) and healthy programs to all low income and undocumented people in this country. To do that, i really want to get into the habit of researching and developing more ways and ideas to help community members gain information of affordable to free services in or around their areas. This is focused in public health, community, and policy.

I'm interested in learning about...
I am more inclined to learning about health issues that are affecting immigrant families and first generation children here in the country. I also want to learn more about other evidence-based research that has approached other disadvantaged communities in a form of interventional healthy programs to assist others, and what are the results from that. Last, i want to find out the mental health services (that accept Medicaid/Medicare) that are available in every part of Chicago by zip code to see if there are health disparities in regards to which neighborhoods has less access to accepted health insurance mental health services.
