Educational background: B.S. in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology from the University of FloridaHost Site: Jacksonville Health and Transition Services (JaxHATS)
What is your title and role at your host site? I will be serving as an outreach coordinator. My role is to develop questions and survey patients, families, and staff to identify inpatient needs for healthcare transition. This information will be compiled and I will work with the JaxHATS team to implement inpatient services for healthcare transition. I will also serve as the primary point of contact when consultation or referral for inpatient services is requested and will help provide these services to clients.
Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
As an aspiring medical professional whose hometown is Jacksonville, I wanted to serve the community I love during my gap year before medical school. Teaching others the value of health and preventative medicine has been my passion and the similar mission of National Health Corps is what inspired me to join this program. Working with underserved communities is gratifying work that will help me gain valuable life skills that I can apply to my future career.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I hope to gain insight on healthcare disparities and the importance of treating the whole patient as opposed to only treating the medical aspects. Through patient and staff interactions, I hope to grow as both a leader and a conscientious listener. Understanding these barriers to healthcare will help me appreciate individualized patient care and holistic medicine that I will utilize in my future medical career.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I plan to matriculate into Medical school and start a four-year M.D. program.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I envision myself in a residency program in the field of either orthopedic medicine or pediatrics.
