Hometown: Portland, Maine

Educational background: BA in Diplomacy and World Affairs from Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA

Host Site: FDOH Duval

What is your title and role at your host site?
As a health educator at FDOH Duval County, I will be providing young people and community members with reproductive health education. The goal of the position is to assist in reducing the rate of STIs and unintended pregnancies in Duval County, particularly among 15 to 24 year olds. I will be conducting educational workshops with young people and community groups, as well as training peer educators to increase the outreach capacity of FDOH Duval. These educational sessions aim to provide evidence-based information that will allow recipients to make their own healthy decisions.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
Over the past four years, I have discovered a passion for reproductive health and justice. After becoming deeply involved with both issues on campus, I knew that I wanted to continue my involvement post-graduation. The NHC Florida program provided a perfect opportunity to stay involved, committing myself to public health service, and surrounding myself with peers who share my passions. The FDOH Duval County position is a perfect fit for my interests and experience, and I can’t wait to begin our year of service!

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
A year of service with NHC Florida will expose me to the public health field, while also providing valuable training and support. I’m hoping to increase my experience in the public health field, and, through my specific position, my experience teaching sex education and working with diverse communities. In addition to the professional growth, I’m looking forward to meeting peers and making friends who share my passion for public health.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After AmeriCorps, I hope to continue working in the reproductive health field, involving myself in education, access, and outreach. I would love to move from AmeriCorps to another incredible organization, like Planned Parenthood or NARAL Pro-Choice. I may also apply to graduate school for a Masters in Public Health.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I hope to be working for a reproductive health organization. I would like to devote my time and my career to eradicating disparities in sexual
