What is your title and role at your host site?
I will be serving as a care coordinator at UF Health. As a care coordinator, I will be working with pregnant, postpartum, and inter-conception women and their families to promote healthy pregnancy, child development, and women’s wellness. I will also assess pregnant and postpartum women for opioid use and risk of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. I will also be following up with patients to enroll them in community programs such as Little Miracles, Healthy Start and Nurse Family Partnership. Additionally, I will also conduct nutrition and exercise classes for clients enrolled in these programs.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
I joined the National Health Corps Florida because it combines my passion for service, public health, and medicine. As a public health major, I had the opportunity to learn about health care from many different perspectives including nutrition, health policy, health behavior, and epidemiology. The National Health Corps program will allow me to apply my education to provide quality health care to women in the Jacksonville community. Furthermore, I am excited to learn more about combating health disparities in maternal health.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I look forward to the immense personal and professional growth I will experience during this service year. I will gain numerous skills like communicating with providers and educating patients. Additionally, I hope this year of service will help me be a better provider and advocate for my patients. Furthermore, I hope to build new connections and friendships with like-minded peers!

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After my service with AmeriCorps, I plan to attend medical school. I hope to pursue a dual degree in medicine and public health.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I envision myself finishing up medical school and pursuing a residency. I hope to continue working with underserved populations.
