Hometown: West Palm Beach, FL
Educational background: Bachelor of Science in Public Health; University of South Florida
Host Site: THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health at Wolfson Children’s Hospital
What is your title and role at your host site?
As a Care Coordinator at THE PLAYERS Center, my role will entail increasing access to and capacity of resources that are essential to maintaining good child health for our community. This includes identifying and working with families with uninsured children to enroll them to the Child Health Insurance Program. Along with capacity building and connecting those in need to resources, my role as a Care Coordinator also entails educating children on health behaviors ranging from hygiene, nutrition, anatomy, and efficacy as a consumer of healthcare services.
Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
As a college graduate looking to start a career in Public Health, I have always felt strongly about working to represent underserved, underrepresented, and vulnerable members of society in terms of their access to healthcare services. I found that serving with the National Health Corps will be a fulfilling experience personally and professionally.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I am excited to start my service with the National Health Corps because this experience will give me many things to learn about. I look forward to working with a greatly diverse population and working with them to overcome the social determinants of their health.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
My plans after my AmeriCorps service include serving with the Peace Corps in a Public Health initiative overseas and enrolling in graduate school to pursue graduate degrees in Public Health and Health Administration.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I would like to see myself working with legislation and health policy to influence healthcare access for all or working in administration for a non-profit hospital or organization to develop public health programs for the community. Apart from my professional goals, I would like to be able to speak a couple more languages, travel the world, and learn about other cultures’ music, art, and cuisine.
