What is your title and role at your host site?
As Outreach Coordinator, I will be connecting with medical service providers and social service organizations to provide information about and expand the reach of the Jacksonville Speech and Hearing Center’s services. Ultimately, my aim is to increase physician referrals and to broaden community education and awareness about speech and hearing health.
Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
Before continuing my education, I’m looking for practical experience on how people interact with our health care system from all different angles. Additionally, service has always been an important part of my life, so service that allows me to expand on my interest in public health? Ideal.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
As touched on before, I’m hoping to gain a better understanding of health care and how people interact with it, and to improve my ability to communicate about health care in general.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After perhaps another year or two working within the public health field here or abroad in order to broaden my range of experience, I intend to earn a master’s degree in Public or Global Health.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I plan to be working to influence and shape health policy; the specifics of how and where, I’ll nail down in these intervening years.
