What is your title and role at your host site?
As Health Educator at Tiger Academy YMCA Charter School, my role will be administering nutrition education and implementing a community garden program, as part of the YMCA’s SEEDifferently initiative. My role also includes conducting small-group literacy tutoring in the classroom and assisting with outreach for YMCA wellness programs. I will be recruiting and providing support and follow-up for participation in the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) program, where participants will learn to improve their overall health through exercise.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
I joined National Health Corps because I wanted to develop professionally, specifically in the field of public health, as well as gain further direction in my career path. I have a passion for personal, community, & environmental health and I saw this position as an amazing opportunity to impact children and families by giving them the tools (such as knowledge, resources, and positive experiences) to live healthier and happier lives.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I look forward to gaining experience teaching health and becoming skilled and confident at the various tasks involved with my position. I am eager to participate in the leadership, team-building, and training experiences that will be available while serving with the National Health Corps.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
As far as my plans after my AmeriCorps, what I do next will most certainly will depend on how my experience as a health educator goes. I have high hopes and confidence that my experience will encourage me to pursue a career in health education, however, some possibilities include getting my CHES certification, enrolling in an environmental education certificate program or a nonprofit management certificate program.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I would like to be administering and managing health education as well as serving as a health education resource person, perhaps for a nonprofit or for a school health program similar to this one. My passion lies within public health and environmental education, so my ideal job would consist of health education, with some sort of environmental tie-in.
