What is your title and role at your host site?I will be serving as a Patient Navigator for Gateway Community Services, Inc. located in the Jacksonville area. As a Patient Navigator, I will spend half of my service term in the Detox program and the other half in the Medicated- Assisted Treatment (MAT) program. My main responsibilities will be to assist patients who are seeking recovery from addiction, connect them with program staff and other community resources to ensure patients are receiving appropriate services, and provide patient education in regards to their health and recovery.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program? I joined the National Health Corps to serve in communities facing health inequities, become a more informed member of society, and therefore shaping my ability to care for patients in the future. I think it is important to understand that health care coverage is not equal or accessible to everyone in the U.S., and I want to take a closer, in-depth look at all of the facets of the public health care system where it exceeds and where it needs improvement.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service? I hope to gain invaluable knowledge and experience working with vulnerable populations so that I can provide a voice and become a public health advocate for those who need it most.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service? I plan to attend medical school after my service term with AmeriCorps.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years? In five years I will be getting ready to graduate from medical school, and on my way to an OB/GYN residency. I will be happy, healthy, and motivated to make public health changes!
