Nathan Liu

I developed a passion and interest in public health, and joining AmeriCorps seemed like the perfect way to continue doing the work I loved as a peer educator.

Hometown:
Hollis, NH

Educational background:
B.A. in Psychology from University of North Carolina Wilmington

Host Site:
Florida Department of Health: Nassau County

What is your title and role at your host site? Care Coordinator. I will be serving with the Department of Health's Healthy Start program to help prevent preterm and low-weight births, decrease infant mortality, and  reduce teen pregnancy and the incidence of childhood injuries.  I will be extending the outreach of the program to lower risk groups that are currently missed by completing self-referrals, and initial contacts in new venues such as WIC and the hospital labor and delivery unit. In addition, I will help provide additional services such as curriculum-based support groups, community outreach activities and screening promotion activities.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
During my last year of undergrad, I had the opportunity to work as a peer educator for my university's Health Promotion office. I developed a passion and interest in public health, and joining AmeriCorps seemed like the perfect way to continue doing the work I loved as a peer educator. Also, as an aspiring physician, I think it is crucial that I have experience with and an understanding of as many aspects of our healthcare system as possible.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I hope to gain a better understanding of public health, as well as more experience working with underserved, vulnerable populations. Furthermore, I am always looking for ways to hone my professional skills, especially my leadership, and given NHC’s unique commitment to member development, I think I will gain a lot in that regard!

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I think I will try to apply to the Peace Corps. If that doesn't work out, I will probably apply to medical school and possibly another year of AmeriCorps.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I hope to be in medical school, working towards my long term goals of becoming a pediatrician and eventually working with Doctors Without Borders.
