"The Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition and NHC FL AmeriCorps provides me with the opportunity to seek and find my own opportunities within the community to ultimately promote wellness."

Hometown: Jacksonville, Fl

Educational background: Bachelors of Health Sciences

Host Site: Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition

What is your title and role at your host site: Outreach Coordinator. My responsibilities include a variety of activities involving reducing the infant mortality rate of Northeast Florida in particular Duval county. Service consists of conducting outreach in the community to inform women of Healthy Start services and possible enrollment into the Healthy Start program as well as provider outreach. Provider outreach includes weekly visitation to 13/14 OBGYN offices in which I collect Healthy Start screens, ensure completeness/accuracy, educating the office staff on the importance of screening, and providing educational material upon request. Health education is also a component of my responsibilities; I facilitate a short, but informational Safe Sleep presentation 3x/week at a local WIC (Women, Infant, & Children) office. The coalition also provides me with the opportunity to seek and find my own opportunities within the community to ultimately promote wellness.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
While attending the University of North Florida I attended an informational session in which a representative told the crowd about various AmeriCorps programs. At the time I was interested in NCCC, but as I delved more into my Health Sciences degree track the more my interest began to shift. After graduating from UNF I was fortunate enough to receive a full time position as a case manager where I gained valuable experience that ultimately is and will enrich my AmeriCorps service term.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I hope to gain more hands on experience in the field of Public Health in particular community/provider outreach. I also hope to gain more understanding and or determine future plans.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
What a great question! I definitely plan to pursue employment within the Public Health Field and or Healthcare field. Nursing school is an option worth pursuing as well.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I envision myself working within the Public Health field or possibly continuing my education.
