Position Title: Patient Advocate I 

Why did you join NHC Pittsburgh? 

My undergraduate experiences in Pittsburgh provided me with insight into some of the barriers that restrict individuals from receiving healthcare on campus and in the greater Pittsburgh area. I was motivated to pursue a position where I would play a role in improving health care accessibility, addressing social determinants of health, and promoting inclusivity in a diverse patient population. Additionally, I was interested in being a part of a collaborative patient care team that prioritizes empowering patients as well as improving access to education and resources. 

What do you hope to gain or learn during your service term? 

I hope to broaden my understanding of the challenges that our patient population faces and work within the interprofessional team at the Birmingham Free Clinic to provide patients with the care, education, and resources to address their specific needs. I am also interested in learning more about the work and interests of my fellow cohort members and how we can collaborate to develop community-based initiatives that prioritize accessibility to resources in all aspects of health. 

What are you most looking forward to during your service term? 

I am looking forward to building relationships with patients and learning from their unique experiences, allowing me to understand their needs on a deeper level and advocate for their values. In addition to being directly involved in patient care, I am excited to have the opportunity to lead projects that address social determinants of health in my community. 

What is something you appreciate about serving in Pittsburgh/at your Host Site? 

I enjoy having the opportunity to connect with patients from all throughout Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania and learn from their stories. I am also enjoying learning and growing my skills in a team environment within the clinic. 

What are your plans after your service as an AmeriCorps member? 

Following my year of service, I hope to attend medical school and pursue a career as a physician. I plan to continue my focus working in communities where many patients are uninsured or face social determinants of health in their everyday lives. Additionally, I hope to be involved in my community outside of my role as a medical professional through outreach and service.
