Celebrating a Service Leader in Pennsylvania and the Nation - Harris Wofford

  • Apr 25, 2013

While the day was billed as the 1st Annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service, mayors were not the only ones acknowledging AmeriCorps members, staff and alumni for their service.  In Philadelphia, Mayor Nutter and CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer were joined by the Honorable Harris Wofford, former U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania from 1991-1995, in acknowledging the impact of service in Philadelphia and throughout Pennsylvania.

Senator Wofford served as the CEO of CNCS from 1995 to 2001.  On February 15th, he received the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Obama.  The award, the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, recognizes American citizens who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens.

In his speech in Philadelphia, Wofford spoke of how his experiences as a soldier in World War II convinced him that there should be a civilian counterpart to the military that would provide an alternative way for Americans to serve their country.  Wofford then worked with former Governor Robert Casey to form the Governor’s Office of Citizens Service, now known as PennSERVE.  It was a honor to meet Senator Wofford and to help him celebrate his birthday!!!
