It’s a reminder to me of our shared humanity, because we will all make it through in the end by doing ordinary things, and, occasionally, some things that are a little more remarkable. At NSC, we connect our clients to the health care that they ask for and need.

One of the pivotal moments for me during these interviews was speaking with the mother of a son we helped a few months earlier. He had recently moved to Philadelphia due to a fatal health concern and was having trouble getting health coverage. One of my colleagues was able to get him Medicaid in a matter of days which allowed him to get a surgery that saved his life.

Even in the best of circumstances, health-related work, especially within underserved communities like the ones in which NHC members serve, can be quite challenging. This is something we talked about often during Pre-Service Orientation— the reality that although the service that we are all doing is important, it might not always be immediately apparent when we are “in the trenches.”
