How to Apply

Who can become an AmeriCorps member?

National Health Corps Philadelphia members must be 18 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident, and have a high school diploma or G.E.D.  We value individuals who have already demonstrated a commitment to service through previous volunteer work and who have an interest in a career in the health profession or human services.

How do I become a National Health Corps Philadelphia member?

If you are interested in serving as a NHC member, the first step is completing an application.

Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will be contacted to complete a questionaire via email and asked to return it to the NHC Program Staff.  Our interview process has two steps.  First, applicants are interviewed by the program director, to determine their suitability for the program.  If deemed suitable, they are given a description of the available host sites.  From these descriptions, they select their first, second, and third choice.  They are then referred to the host site of their first choice for an interview. If after the interview with the host site supervisor, the member and host site believe the placement would be a good match, then the member is placed there.  If the member is unsure about the placement or if the site is unsure, then the member moves on to her or his second choice and the host site waits for another candidate.  In this way, both the member and host site have buy-in to the placement. Interviews begin in the spring and continue through the summer until all placements are made.

Enrolling in the National Health Corps Philadelphia

Before an applicant can be enrolled in the NHC, she or he must provide the Program Director with the following documents: proof of citizenship or naturalization (birth certificate, passport etc), high school diploma, and photo ID.  All members will also need to complete a Criminal Record check.  Members applying for AmeriCorps’ childcare benefits are required to provide birth certificates for all children requesting care.

When Should I Apply?

NHC Philadelphia conducts interviews during the spring and summer months and enrolls members in September. However, we occasionally have mid-year placements. Please contact us to find out more about current program offerings.
