Why did you join National Health Corps?
I joined National Health Corps because I have a passion for improving the lives of others. I believe access to health care is a right not a privilege. NHC will give me the opportunity to gain more insight about the needs of undeserved communities and steps taken to eliminate health disparities.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After AmeriCorps I plan to pursue a Masters degree in Public Health concentrating in Health Policy or Health Education and Behavioral Science.
Tell us about an employment, service, or research experience that was important to you.
During my time at Wake Forest I had the opportunity to intern at Wake's Office of Well being. The Office of Wellbeing leads the campus incorporating wellbeing in all aspects of the campus community. I assisted with the initial phases of the Tobacco Free Campus Policy that is expected to be enacted January 2017. I believe that an environment that promotes and educates a healthy lifestyle is one step closer to achieving healthier communities.
What first sparked your interest in community service?
I grew a passion for serving others from my mother. She always gives without expecting anything return. I witnessed from a young age her volunteering her time and talents in church, for family, neighbors, and even strangers. I began volunteering in my community in high school through school and church, and I continued my efforts in college. I find that I am always learning more about other people and myself while being a service to others.
What about Philadelphia excites you the most?
What excites me most about Philadelphia is that it will be so much different from the South. It has so much history and is located close to neighboring metropolitan areas.
