Why did you join NHC?
I wanted the opportunity to work closely with patients and members from the community in a health care setting. Through such an immersive experience, I hope to better understand the everyday challenges and successes facing Philadelphians.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I want to continue my year of service in Philadelphia as an advocate for the patients I see everyday at the health centers.

Tell us about an employment, service, or research experience that was important to you.
When I entered college, I was passionate about art. Integrating my interests in art history and my focus on my surrounding community, I found an avenue to explore the local art community at a non-profit art revitalization center. There, I was surrounded by incredibly passionate and creative individuals who made direct impacts in the diverse neighborhoods. Their creative use of space and materials inspired me to look at communities and service in entirely different ways.

What first sparked your interest in community service?
People matter, and communities matter. Growing up in a suburban bubble, I made a conscious decision to immerse myself in the Baltimore community where I went for school. Through working alongside Baltimorean teens and community organizers, I developed a strong understanding of the issues and needs in the city. Community service allowed me to connect with the city and its citizens, and I hope to do the same in all the communities I become a part of.

What about Philadelphia excites you the most?
