Why did you join National Health Corps?
To help increase the access of healthcare to underserved populations and gain on-hand experience working in the public health sector.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After AmeriCorps, I would like to either pursue a Masters in Public Health or attend medical school.
Tell us about an employment, service, or research experience that was important to you.
I volunteered at Nationwide Children's starting in high school, and it was one of the most amazing experiences I had. I was able to take part in the care of premature babies as well as interact with the babies' family members. Through this role, I was able to understand the problems affecting the working poor in the region and how hard it can be for people to pay for and find affordable healthcare. Spending time here inspired me to dedicate myself to helping underserved medical populations as well as pursue further education in the healthcare realm.
What first sparked your interest in community service?
My parents always encouraged me to volunteer and instilled in me the importance of giving back to those in need. After I started volunteering in middle school at my local library to increase literacy in my town, I realized how much I loved making a difference, and from then on, I wanted to continue helping others for the rest of my life.
What about Philadelphia excites you the most?
Everything (especially the food and the historical sites)! I've never been to Philadelphia before, so I can't wait to explore the city and discover new things!
What is your favorite dessert?
Hometown: Dublin, Ohio
