Why did you join NHC?
I wanted to give back to the community that helped raise me while simultaneously learning and gaining experience in the public health field.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I hope to be in a graduate program for a Master's in Public Health

Tell us about an employment, service, or research experience that was important to you.
I tutored children at the Jane Addams place, a domestic violence shelter for mothers and their children. Being able to teach the kids, but also offer support and a listening ear was something that these kids needed. We also sometimes helped the mothers if they needed it. I was humbled by the children's hunger for education and their strong spirit to continue on. Their laughter was contagious, and they taught me how to smile no matter what.

What first sparked your interest in community service?
I was traveling with my mother in her hometown in Cambodia, and we saw a young, homeless mother holding her newborn baby. She was begging for food and water, and I felt like we needed to do something. My mother bought her a hot meal and some water, and told the young woman that she needs to preserver for her child. My mother then told me that we need to give back the community as much as we can because we were lucky enough to be where we are today. Do as much good as possible, and to give back as much as possible is my mother's mantra that has stuck with me to this day.
