Why did you join NHC?
I joined the National Health Corps because I wanted to gain more clinical and public health experience before entering medical school. I am passionate about the disparities in healthcare and alleviating barriers to accessing care, which is a central value of the National Health Corps. Additionally, as a Spanish major, I was excited to possibly work with many of the service sites, which cater to large Hispanic populations throughout the Greater Philadelphia Area.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After my year of service with AmeriCorps, I hope to attend medical school.
Tell us about an employment, service, or research experience that was important to you.
Volunteering at a small clinic in Norristown, PA throughout college was a very important experience for me. Helping with free monthly check-ups for the community members, who were largely uninsured and spoke limited English, was very fulfilling and taught me volumes about the barriers to healthcare. This was my first major medical service experience, and has greatly influenced my future goals as a physician.
What first sparked your interest in community service?
My interest in service started in high school. As an alumnus of Saint Joseph's Prep, I was surrounded by a strong, Jesuit culture of service. Consequently, I was provided with many opportunities to serve the local community of North Philadelphia during my four years. As I further involved myself in leadership service roles, I became increasingly more passionate and knew I wanted to continue serving others in the future.
What about Philadelphia excites you the most?
I have grown up in the Philadelphia area my whole life, so many of the traditional tourist sites are already very familiar to me. However, what excites me the most about the city is when I discover a new neighborhood, park, or restaurant that I never knew existed.
