Was there a challenging moment at your site that you had to overcome? How'd you overcome it and what did you learn from it? I taught Kids Cook lessons at one after school program and that was a very challenging experience for me. The students there were extremely unruly, even with the staff assisting me. At first, I had a lot of trouble with this and got anxious before each lesson. But despite the craziness at the beginning of each lesson, I decided to connect with students more on an individual level by talking one-on-one with them, while they were in their small groups...

Was there a specific event/experience at your site that allowed you to directly and positively impact a patient's life through your service?Although the Birmingham Clinic is able to provide a multitude of services for our patients, we are still limited to a certain extent. For example, we had a hypertensive patient referred to our cardiology clinic and through a routine work up they discovered that he needed cardiothoracic surgery quite urgently. However, the physicians were unable to move forward since he was uninsured...

What's your most favorite memory of the Pittsburgh Health Corps (PHC) thus far and why? What are you up to now? I am currently working as an In-Person Assister for the Affordable Care Act. Did your AmeriCorps experience have any influence on what you are doing today? Absolutely! During my time serving, I compiled information about the Affordable Care Act to share with people with Multiple Sclerosis. When I was interviewed for this position as an In-Person Assister, not only were my employers happy that I was knowledgable about the reform, but they also made a point to acknowledge my year with AmeriCorps...
