What do you do at your site to provide quality health care for the uninsured, underinsured, and underserved populations? The East Liberty Family Health Care Center is dedicated to making sure each self-pay patient’s eligibility is accessed for health benefits, including Medicaid, Medicare, the Affordable Care Act and SNAP. As a Pittsburgh Health Corps member and Social Services Coordinator at the center, I help patients enroll in health care coverage and help patients submit and follow up with their applications for other services, like SNAP...

How has your experience with the Pittsburgh Health Corps helped you gain your current job position? My service year with the Pittsburgh Health Corps, specifically my host site the National MS Society (NMSS), has allowed me to grow professionally and personally. As part of my first project at the NMSS, I created a PowerPoint about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to share with MS patients, which was a challenging task at the time because parts of the law were still changing...

How has your service year with the Pittsburgh Health Corps (PHC) thus far helped you solidify your future aspirations? I believe that my service year with the PHC will help me smoothly transition into medical school this upcoming fall 2014, because my service year thus far has given me much exposure to the medical field. By serving at my host site, the National MS Society, I have gained much insight into the different medications and treatment options for MS, built close relationships with many patients, and witnessed the positive impact medicine plays in the community...

What do you do at your site to provide primary and preventative medical care services to the populations you serve? The Squirrel Hill Health Center (SHHC) provides low-cost medical care to underserved populations across Southwestern Pennsylvania. In addition to having a primary care clinic in Squirrel Hill/Homestead, the SHHC also operates a "Mobile Unit," which travels to various underserved areas in Pittsburgh to help alleviate some barriers of accessing medical care for many of our patients...
