I received a Bachelor of Science at Central Michigan University with a major in Community Health Education and a minor in Substance Abuse Education and Prevention.
What is your title and role at your host site?
I serve as an Outreach Coordinator for the Allegheny County Health Department. The purpose of my role is to advance the childhood obesity prevention strategies in the Chronic Disease Prevention Program. This includes increasing physical activity in the school setting as well as assisting the Live Well Allegheny program, educating residents about increasing nutrition and physical activity through health promotion events.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
After serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA for a year, I felt I had more to learn and give to my community. AmeriCorps has given me unique opportunities and challenged me to grow in more ways than I ever imagined. I have chosen NHC as my next service term because I am eager to dive deeper into the field of public health and experience population care in an urban environment.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
Everything and anything! I hope to discover more about public health, expand my critical thinking skills, and learn all I can from those around me. Service is all about growth and open-mindedness.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After my service term, I plan on working in public health and begin pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Health.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I envision myself having achieved my MPH and working in a position where I am making a difference in the lives of others. I plan on adding to and crossing off as many things on my bucket list as possible!
