What is your title and role at your host site?

I am a Patient Navigator at the Birmingham Free Clinic. As a patient navigator, I help underinsured individuals in the Pittsburgh community navigate the medications and health services they need. I also consider social determinants and other issues that could be influencing patient health.

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?

I decided to join the AmeriCorps/National Health Corps because I want to work with underserved people in my home community who are in the greatest need of health care services. I have education in various aspects of global health, but my application of this knowledge is limited.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

During my year of service, I hope to gain a better understanding of the impact that social determinants have on patient health by listening to their stories. I am excited to work with patients to establish healthy, professional relationships geared towards their betterment. I am also excited to gain experience working in a clinic with other health professionals.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

Following my AmeriCorps year, I plan to attend medical school. My AmeriCorps service year will hopefully give me clarity on whether medical school or a master’s in public health is the best next step for my education.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I envision myself graduating medical school and being matched with a residency program.
