What is your title and role at your host site?
Patient Navigator; Basically, I do exactly what my role says! I help patients navigate the complicated and often confusing ins and outs of the healthcare system. I am like the middle-(wo)man between a patient’s entire health care team, and I ensure that they are getting the help they need, when the need it. This ranges from answering questions, to helping with appointments, to overall empowering patients to understand and prioritize their own health needs.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
I joined the National Health Corps because I wanted to learn from patients directly about how to improve patient care. I also believe that public health issues are the future of healthcare as a whole, and as such, need to be taken more seriously by the medical and global community.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I hope to gain insight into what our communities need most from healthcare providers. Additionally, I hope to build valuable relationships with my peers, mentors, and patients to learn from each of their own life experiences.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
This is mostly me speaking something into existence, but hopefully participating in a Fulbright research scholarship abroad! Fingers crossed!
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
Starting an MD/PhD program and owning my own dog!
