What is your title and role at your host site?
Allegheny County Health Dept.- Program Assistant & Health Educator
I split my time between the Chronic Disease Prevention Program and the Maternal and Child Health Program. I develop and deliver health education to the community regarding nutrition, diabetes, and basic social needs.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
I wanted to have an impactful gap year before medical school. I joined NHC because I knew it would encourage me to grow and help me become a better physician in the future. The program combines many of my passions. I will be teaching, presenting, leading a team, and planning community events. I will help create a healthier community. One that is focused on preventative care and not just treatment of conditions that could have had an earlier intervention.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I want to form sustainable relationships between members of the community and encourage growth and interconnectedness. I will learn to effectively communicate and create common goals with a diverse group of people.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I hope to attend medical school.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I hope to have started a medical residency program.
