What is your title and role at your host site?
I serve as a Mobile Medical Unit Coordinator, providing health navigation and patient support, Mobile Medical Unit operations coordination, health education programs, food insecurity initiatives, health awareness campaigns and outreach.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
I joined AmeriCorps as a gap year opportunity before applying to medical school. I thought this program would be especially beneficial in allowing me to gain more exposure and experience in the medical field, as well as an opportunity to learn more about the healthcare discrepancies in our country and working with vulnerable populations.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I am hoping to gain more understanding and experience of working in the medical field that will be beneficial as I continue my education in medical school. I am also hoping to grow personally and to make connections with my fellow AmeriCorps members, coworkers, and the community I will be serving.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After AmeriCorps, I plan to apply to medical school to fulfill my goal of becoming a physician. While I do not know what specialty I plan to pursue, I am interested in working with vulnerable populations who are underserved and underrepresented in our healthcare system.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I hope to be in medical school, working towards my future goals.
