What is your title and role at your host site?
I am the Outreach Coordinator and Health Educator within the Chronic Disease Prevention Program at the Allegheny County Health Department.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
I wanted to serve the community that I have grown to call home in a meaningful and impactful way while exploring my interests in public health, and the Health Corps seemed like an excellent way to accomplish this.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I am looking forward to gaining a deeper understanding of current public health issues and how people and organizations in Allegheny County are working to address these problems. I also hope to enhance my ability to communicate with and care for a diverse group of patients as well as learn about the influence of the social determinants of health on chronic disease.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I plan on attending medical school and perhaps pursuing an MPH degree as well so that I may practice in community and public health.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I hope to have completed medical school and begun my residency. I also hope to have a pet dog.
