What is your title and role at your host site?

I am serving as a Health Promoter for obese and hypertensive patients at Primary Care Health Services, INC. I educate and encourage patients on their conditions, follow-up on treatment plan, and refer them to appropriate community resources when necessary. I work to expand the Reach Out and Read child literacy program, help patients navigate their electronic health record, and assist in eliminating barriers to prescription medications.

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?

After completing a year of AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps, I wanted to continue serving the community, particularly improving patient’s healthcare experience. I wanted to interact with patients on a personal level, be a part of the healthcare team, and understand the financial aspect of healthcare. In addition, I want to learn more about healthcare disparities and ways to eliminate it.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

I hope to gain valuable skills that will assist me in the future as a physician.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

I hope to attend medical school after my term of service.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

I see myself graduating from medical school and entering residency.
