Educational background: B.S in Biological Sciences at Chapman University
What is your title and role at your host site?
Patient Support Specialist on the mobile health unit at Squirrel Hill Health Center
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
I wanted to pursue an opportunity that would integrate my interests in service and the healthcare field. I thought about what I wanted to do with my gap year, and wanted to challenge myself to do something unexpected and get out of my comfort zone. I think my year with NHC will be a great learning experience, and provide me with real life experiences that I can take into my career in the medical field. It will also be a chance to give back and work with like-minded individuals to continue to improve healthcare for the underserved.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
Over the course of the year, I hope to gain professional skills I can use in my future. I also look forward to learning about the challenges the underserve face in terms of healthcare, particularly here in Pittsburgh. I hope to gain experience working with a diverse group of individuals, and I am excited for the opportunity to meet new people and explore a new city!
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I am currently in the process of applying to medical school. After this year, I hope to begin my journey to becoming a physician.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In five years, I hope to have just graduated from medical school and be in residency, training to be either a pediatrician or OBGYN.
