Educational background: B.S. Biology, Minor: Psychology. Allegheny College
What is your title and role at your host site?
Health Educator/ Outreach Coordinator, Allegheny County Health Department, STD and HIV/AIDS Program. My role includes providing STD & HIV/AIDS education, identify areas in the city for this type of education, complete health screenings and STD testing, aid in research, and help to create a resource map of hot spot zones with high infection rates.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
Growing up, service had always been important to my family and church family, and so it became important to me. As I talked with some alum and became more familiar with the program, I realized how strong and valuable it was to the surrounding community. I knew I would be taking a gap year between my undergraduate and graduate studies and this program was an exact match to what I wanted to be doing during that year. I am confident standing behind the mission and values of the National Health Corps and see it as a place of personal growth. Pittsburgh has been and always will be my home and I wanted to take the opportunity to give back. The reason I joined National Health Corps was because it incorporates many of things I am passionate about service, medicine, and improving healthcare!
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
During my year of service, I am hoping to gain a better understanding of the current health problems faced in the city and the areas in greatest need of health care. I am hoping to empower others in their journey towards healthier living.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
After AmeriCorps service, I will be continuing my education to become a Physician Assistant.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years, I envision myself graduated with a Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies. I am not quite sure what specialty I want to pursue, but would love to be working overseas with a medical missions organization. Two years ago I traveled to Nicaragua on a servicelearning trip and would like to return there following graduation to work in a rural clinic for a period.
