What is your title and role at your host site?
Patient Navigator (Patient Population Management Specialist) at Squirrel Hill Health Center-Brentwood
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
I have always known I wanted to go into public health, but it’s such a broad field that I felt there was so much I still hadn’t experienced through my internships and such, especially direct service. I really wanted to see which type of public health work I’m most cut out for, while also positively impacting a city that has given me so much but has a lot of inequality to tackle.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I want to really experience what direct health service means – the challenges, the rewards, and the skills most important to be effective in this field. One of the aspects I’m most excited for is getting to work together with patients who likely share a history of systematic oppression but have very different stories and diverse life experiences.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I plan to attend graduate school for a Master’s in Public Health.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I would like to have earned an MPH and be working in the community health field.
