Position Summary

Girls in the Game empowers girls to take ownership of their health and lives by encouraging healthy habits and providing the skills and safe space they need to grow up confident and strong. Decades of research has shown that girls involved in athletics experience higher levels of confidence, develop healthier habits, fare better academically, and have lower drop-out rates than their peers. Girls who participate in an innovative programs like Girls in the Game are 96 percent more likely to graduate high school than those who do not (After School Alliance, 2011). In addition, girls who participate in active programming have healthier self-confidence and body image (Girl Scout Research Institute, 2006). Studies find that adolescents who attend after-school programs earn significantly higher grades compared with nonparticipants (The Campaign for Educational Equality 2009).

Girls in the Game believes in combatting oppression by validating girls’ experiences and providing long-term, community-based service. We intentionally provide support to girls in our programs through the course of their adolescence and focus on long-term integration into schools in underserved target communities, particularly North Lawndale, Englewood, and Humboldt Park. We strive for stable, long-term community involvement and to create curriculum which is trauma-informed and responsive to the girls we serve, we recognize that health-inequality and income-inequality are linked and provide safe spaces where girls can be active.
