What is your title and role at your host site? This year, I will be serving as the Patient Navigator at River Region Human Services. My role is to help our clients increase their access to healthcare by assisting with Medicaid applications, helping them navigate the Prescription Medication Assistance Program, increasing the number of primary care appointments and networking with different community partners to effectively link our clients to valuable resources.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps? I joined the National Health Corps because I want to serve in a healthcare setting where I can build relationships with different people and help them overcome the obstacles they may face.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service? I am hoping to grow both professionally and personally from this experience. Professionally, I would like to get a better idea of how the healthcare system works and I want to get a better understanding of the barriers people face when trying to access healthcare. Personally, I would like to improve my communication skills and get more experience working on a diverse team.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service? I will hopefully be attending medical school after this year of service.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years? In five years, I will hopefully have graduated from medical school and started my first year of residency.
