What is your role at your host site?

As a Women’s Services Outreach Associate for UF-Health Healthy Start, I have the opportunity to screen at-risk and underserved women of the Jacksonville area to determine their eligibility for the Healthy Start program. I educate patients on the risks of certain factors and inform them of ways (Parenting Education, Smoking Cessation Packet, etc.) they can have a more healthy and successful pregnancy. I educate my patients on the signs and symptoms of preterm labor and follow-up on patients admitted to Women’s Acute Care/ Triage unit.

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?

As a Jacksonville native, I wanted to take this opportunity to further outreach to the more underserved and at-risk areas of my city. Through my previous membership in local organizations, I became aware of the high infant mortality rate of Duval County and wanted this opportunity to assist UF Health in combating this epidemic.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

I am hoping to gain further clinical exposure to the more at-risk and disadvantaged population of Jacksonville. I also hope to further my knowledge in the area of health disparities and cultural competence. I hope to gain a strong support system through my fellow Corps members and staff.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

I hope to attend Medical School following my AmeriCorps service.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

In five years, I envision myself as a Pediatric Resident.
