Educational background: BA in Global Health Studies and minor in Political Science from Allegheny College
Host Site: Florida Department of Health-Baker County
What is your title and role at your host site?
As a health educator with the Baker County Health Department, I will serve on many preventative health initiatives throughout the community. I will educate local middle school and high school students on topics such as addiction, substance abuse, tobacco, decision making, positive relationships, and managing emotions. I will also serve in a support role for Diabetes Self-Management Classes. In addition, I will provide health and wellness education on topics including nutrition, physical activity, and oral health as a part of the Keeping Baker Healthy Initiative.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
In summer of 2012, I served with Keystone SMILES AmeriCorps VISTA, which instilled in me a passion for service. In college, I continued to pursue many service opportunities in community health, which motivated me to seek an experience where I can help others achieve their health goals in meaningful ways. National Health Corps will allow me to step outside of my comfort zone, and truly invest myself in a new community. Serving with AmeriCorps will provide me with a much broader understanding of the world, as well as how I can use my talents in public health to make a larger difference.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I am motivated to seek diverse experiences in public health, and hope to learn more about the field every day from others of different backgrounds. I love interacting with people, and aspire to develop empathy as a healthcare professional. I look forward to many new challenges throughout my term of service, and working with my community toward meaningful solutions!
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I will pursue my Master’s Degree in Public Health, as well as earn my Certified Health Education Specialist credential. In my spare time, I hope to volunteer with local childhood obesity prevention initiatives.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I plan to pursue a career in worksite health and wellness promotion. In this capacity, I also hope to develop public-private sector childhood obesity prevention initiatives. Serving with the North Florida National Health Corps will provide me with many diverse experiences that will inspire me to seek a lifetime of new opportunities in this exciting field!
