What is your title and role at your host site?

I will be a patient navigator at Sulzbacher Center screening eligible patients so that they may receive dental services and have access to free medications at the Sulzbacher Primary Care clinic. Patients will look to me as an aid to references them to other services provided within the community.  Also, I will be performing dental service outreach to spread awareness of our program.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?

I want to serve in a vulnerable community through clinical experience, and gain the necessary skills to be able to care for the public with health disparities with hopes to make a positive impact on their situation. I have always had a passion for service work and medicine, the National Health Corps molds these elements together in a professional setting allowing me to gain hands-on experience with communities in need.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

I hope to gain a better understanding of different health disparities in the medical field along with ways to care for people that are from different socioeconomic classes or cultures. I believe this year of service will mold me into a more open-minded and professional individual, which will advance me in my future career plans. Also, meeting people with similar interests in medicine and service.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

After AmeriCorps I hope to attend dental school.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I hope to be finishing dental school and preparing to start my own practice.
