Hometown: Tampa, FL

Educational background: Bachelor of Science in Biology from Boston College

What is your title and role at your host site?

I will be the Americorps Care Coordinator with Barnabas Medical Discharge in Nassau County. The main part of my role will be educating the primary care program patients with discharge planning requirements, next steps, and how to access discharge services, which can include lab work, diagnostic testing, or specialty care appointments. This will also include interviewing the patients and referring them to preventative health resources that would help them lead healthier lifestyles. I will also be providing referrals to social services such as for transportation, housing, or food pantry.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?

After working at another AmeriCorps program mentoring and tutoring students in low-income areas for the past two years, I was seeking to develop my dedication to serve vulnerable populations in healthcare. I thought learning about the National Health Corps’ commitment to providing communities with health and wellness education would be an invaluable experience.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

I hope to learn about factors that can prevent people from being healthy. I would also like to collaborate with other AmeriCorps members sharing the same goal. I hope this will help me be a physician who is active at the community level in the future.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

After serving with National Health Corps, I plan to enroll in medical school.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

I will hopefully be graduated from medical school and entering residency. I hope to take what I learn in the program to become a physician who continues to further explore healthcare inequities in the future.
