Hometown: Pittsfield, ME

Educational background: B.A. in Psychology

What is your title and role at your host site?

As a health educator at the New American Welcome Center, I will be serving refugees and immigrants of all ages to promote health and well-being. I will be responsible for facilitating health and wellness activities for both physical and mental health, assisting with the community garden, and facilitating programming for the youth camp. Additionally, I will help to connect individuals with various health and wellness benefits such as SNAP and Medicaid.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?

After being evacuated from the Peace Corps due to Covid-19, I was looking to continue my service within the health field, and I quickly learned that NHC Florida was the perfect place to do so! I have always had a passion for public health, and with NHC I will get the opportunity to gain hands-on experience within the field. I am very excited about the opportunity to continue to teach about health and wellness and to immerse myself in a community that is new to me.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

During my year of service, I hope to gain a broader understanding of the public health issues across the US and learn more about the health needs of the refugee and immigrant population. I am also looking forward to improving my leadership, teaching, and facilitation skills.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

After service, I plan to attend graduate school and earn a master’s degree in Public Health.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I hope to have a master’s degree, and to be happily working in the public health field, possibly internationally!
