What is your role at your host site?

I serve as a Health Educator for two of the YMCA’s programs: Diabetes Prevention and Enhance Fitness. These programs serve adults who are at risk for or suffer from chronic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes and arthritis. I will be conducting community education and outreach to increase participation in these programs, as well as facilitating classes.

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?

My experiences doing service, both domestic and abroad, have been some of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. In this year between undergrad and grad school, I wanted to do something meaningful and productive. I am excited to spend a year in service to the community of Jacksonville while also gaining experience in public health.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

I hope to develop professional skills and public health knowledge that will help me in my future studies and career. I also hope to gain an understanding of how I can continue to make service a part of my life, even after my year as an AmeriCorps member.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

I plan to pursue a Masters in Public Health.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

Five years from now, I would love to be living in another country doing public health research or international development work.
