Philadelphia Health Corps Role: Patient Assistance Program Advocate at Philadelphia Department of Public Health – Health Center 5

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?  I joined NHC because I wanted to be part of Public Health in action! I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to serve in a health center setting, while building relationships with patients. This interpersonal aspect, combined with the value of the Patient Advocate role, drew me to the program.

Where do you want to be in five years? What do you want to be doing?  In five years, I hope to be finishing medical school with a combined MD/MPH degree, while working toward a specialty in Pediatrics or in Women's Health. Ultimately, I aim to work in a community-based setting, either domestically or abroad, while uniting the perspectives of Public Health and medicine to increase health equity for patients.

How would you describe the Philadelphia Health Corps?  PHC is composed of enthusiastic, inquisitive, passionate members, who are like-minded in their desire to make a positive impact on the lives of communities. The members also make up a warm social support system in the Philadelphia area, whether in or out of service.

What is your favorite part of Philadelphia?  My favorite part of Philly? Philadelphia's Magic Gardens. This transformed city space is enchanting, with it's eclectic mosaic walls made from tiles, bicycle wheels, mugs, you name it. I notice something new every time.
