What is your title and role at your host site?

My title is Patient Navigator for the Urban Health Alliance. My role is to provide patients with the resources they need to be successful at meeting their healthcare goals. I am responsible for being the main source of information and services at UF Health Jacksonville Medical Center’s social services hub. I will provide counseling to clients on how to access social services and benefits such as employment assistance, SNAP benefits, Medicaid, housing, prescription medication assistance, transportation, libraries, education, legal support, and financial assistance.

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?

I decided to join NHC because I had previously served as an AmeriCorps member and found the experience very enriching and felt really connected to the mission. I wanted to continue serving our vulnerable communities and NHC allows me to do that in a way the closely aligns with my passion in public health and my professional goal of pursuing a medical degree.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

From my year of service, I am hoping to gain valuable experience working in the health care field. I am looking forward to connecting with the patients I serve and strengthening my commitment to fostering healthier communities. I am hoping to gain a deep understanding of the health care system within the community I’m serving and to gain knowledge and tools to address the health care needs of our most vulnerable populations throughout my future career.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

After my AmeriCorps service term, I plan to apply to medical school and continue serving the needs of my local community.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I hope the be towards the end of obtaining my medical degree and pursuing a medical career focused on fostering healthier communities.
