From Passion to Practice: Service Learning in Chicago

Posted on: August 1, 2017Chicago

Hey y'all! My name is Lena Law and I'm excited to be serving as a Health Educator at Heartland Health Center - Albany Park and Roosevelt next year. My passion for health equity and health as a human right has grown throughout my undergraduate years, and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to apply my passion to make a difference in the lives of others. I'm looking forward to seeing the public health principles I've learned about in classes in action and having an active role in health promotion in underserved communities. I'm also excited to make connections with my fellow NHC members, the Heartland staff, and the people I serve and to explore the wonderful city of Chicago. As an aspiring physician, I hope to gain valuable hands-on experience in the fields of medicine and public health in order to help me better empathize with my patients and serve their needs to the best of my ability.

I'm a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Psychology and Spanish, and a certificate in Global Health. I've worked for three years as a research assistant at the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center and have volunteered in various positions around the community, from a volunteer companion at the VA Hospital to a resource navigator at a local low-income clinic. These service opportunities have given me great experience connecting with people from diverse backgrounds, and I'm excited to continue these experiences with NHC. When I'm not working or studying, I enjoy spending time with friends, reading, practicing yoga, and finding new fun and free events (and food!) around the city. I can't wait to bring my passion for health equity—and my talent for finding free food—to Chicago!
