Kristen serves with the American Cancer Society as a Patient Liaison at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.
As an AmeriCorps member with the Chicago Health Corps, I serve with the American Cancer Society at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Volunteer mobilization is a key part of my commitment to getting things done for America. Our volunteers—ranging in age from college students to baby boomers—work hard every week to reach out to cancer patients to inform them of the services ACS offers and provide support throughout their treatment. Since the beginning of my AmeriCorps term of service, our volunteers have collectively served more than 200 hours and helped countless patients, most of whom are medically disadvantaged. Without the dedication of our volunteers, we wouldn't be able to reach as many patients as we do.
Our volunteers are also essential in providing cancer awareness programming to the general public at Stroger Hospital. November is Lung Cancer Awareness month so our volunteers have kept busy running an informational booth in the hospital lobby, passing out information on cancer prevention, smoking cessation, and healthy living. I am constantly inspired by the commitment and compassion our volunteers display, and serving alongside them is just one of the many things that makes my AmeriCorps experience so rewarding.
