Host Site: Shadyside Family Health Center
Position Title: Diabetes Quality Improvement Coordinator
Where are you from? Chicago, IL
Why did you decide to join NHC?
I joined the National Health Corps with a passion for improving sustainability and equitability of community health. I strongly believe that everyone should have access to the resources that they need to be healthy and well, so I want to learn more about why barriers exist that prevent some folks from achieving this. Gaining experience in health-related settings while practicing interpersonal relationship building with patients and field-professionals allows me to learn the most effective means of achieving the long-term community health for all that I envision.
What are you hoping to gain or learn during your service term?
During my year of service, I hope to gain a better understanding of how barriers to health manifest within the healthcare system. I hope to learn how these barriers impact communities of varying identities to enhance my knowledge about discrimination in healthcare. Additionally, I hope to take away experiences that supplement my understanding of effective methods of enhancing access to health for patients with marginalized identities.
What are you most looking forward to during your service term?
I most look forward to the relationships I will build throughout my service. The connections I create with my fellow service members, along with my patients and colleagues in clinic, will be worthwhile for a lifetime to come.
