What do you do at your site to provide uninsured, underinsured, and underserved patients with community-centered quality health care?
My service site, the East Liberty Family Health Care Center, has many resources for patients to utilize both at the center and throughout the community. In addition to patients seeing knowledgeable providers, the center provides health education and practices preventative care. Specifically, I speak to patients every day on a variety of topics including healthy lifestyle choices, smoking cessation, and issues with asthma. Through the use of motivational interviewing, I am able to help patients identify areas of improvements and set attainable self-management goals for their health.
What is your New Year's service resolution?
My service resolution is to increase my patient interaction by conducting more individual and group educational sessions. I am currently planning Diabetes group visits and Health and Wellness classes at both East Liberty health center locations. Thus far, I have been working extensively on recruiting patients, developing educational materials, and organizing community resources for patients to utilize.
