Throwback Thursday—Meet PHC Alum Jarett Beaudoin!

1.  What did you do after AmeriCorps and what are you doing now?
After my year in AmeriCorps I was lucky enough to be offered at position at my host site, the Nationalities Service Center, as a medical case manager! I am planning on applying to medical school this Fall, and hopefully will continue to work at NSC until I matriculate.

2.  How did AmeriCorps benefit your future goals?
I really appreciate AmeriCorps because it gave me the opportunity to work with an organization that I otherwise would not have been able to connect with. I am interested in pursuing a career in Global Health, and my host site gave me the opportunity to be involved in this field on a domestic level; an experience that would have been impossible to obtain by simply looking for jobs after college. I know that throughout my future career I will continue to pull from the experiences I had while serving and they will make me more equipped for working with under-served populations.

3.  What is one piece of advice you would give to a current/future PHC member?
Talk to the people and clients you serve. I know that it’s easy to fall into a habit where you are handing out medicines or escorting people to appointments without really interacting with them. You can learn a lot about poverty and inequality by listening to your clients’ problems and asking questions. Who knows, you may even be able to point them towards a service that they could utilize.
